What makes you Black?
Many believe in the “one drop” rule when deciding if a person is Black, however, most people identify race based on phenotype.
What side of the debate do you fall on?
Afro Latino isn’t a new term however many Hispanics identify as White no matter what the colour of their skin may be.
In actuality, there are White and Black latin people, just as in any country. There are some who identify with their indigenous Taino and African roots and there are many who do not. As with many countries, they do not celebrate “Black” people so many shy away from it.
Because it has become trendy and popular, many Latinx are adopting the label of “Afro Latino.”
Is that the case with Miami Police Capt. Javier Ortiz? Is he conveniently adopting the label of “Black” because he is being called out on his racism?

Move over Rachel Dolezal. There’s another white person now publicly identifying as being black. This time, however, the person of interest hasn’t stood up for black causes or specialized in black hairstyling techniques. It’s a Miami police captain named Javier Ortiz, an accused racist.
