- You have to plan your trip by a category before the purchase of an airline ticket. The restrictions are we can no longer use people to people or education as a category. Other categories that are permitted are religious, family, and the other most common and broad one is, support of the Cuban people. There are a few others as well if you want more on the categories check the US embassy website.
- While staying in Cuba, using the support of the Cuban people option it can get a little tricky. The best way to solve this confusion while using this category is to do just that, support the Cuban people. Meaning, stay at Airbnb, go to local community restaurants and stay off of anything military related or owned.
- Get a tourist card (Cuban visa) you can purchase this online or at the airport for $75 USD.
- Health insurance. The easiest way to get health insurance is through the Havana airport. There is a booth before customs to purchase for just a few dollars per travel day.
- Plan your itinerary and make sure it is lined up with the rules for the support of the Cuban people option.
- Remember to bring enough cash. The United States debit/credit card does not work in Cuba. You also have to convert your cash to Cuban peso. Remember do not spend your money on restricted areas!
- Remember to keep your receipts of all activities. You do not want to get audited and do not have the proof for your trip. The United States can audit you up to 5 years after your visit.
